Chandelier Size Guide
Getting the size right is just as important as the style. Use this guide to find the ideal fixture diameter and hanging height for any room.
Matching fixture size to room size
Add your room's length and width in feet. That number in inches is your ideal chandelier diameter.
| Room size | Ceiling height | Recommended diameter |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 × 10 ft | 8–9 ft | 18–22" |
| 10 × 12 ft | 8–9 ft | 20–24" |
| 12 × 14 ft | 9–10 ft | 24–28" |
| 14 × 16 ft | 9–10 ft | 28–36" |
| 16 × 18 ft | 10–12 ft | 36–48" |
| 18 × 20 ft | 10–12 ft | 48–54" |
| 20 × 24 ft or larger | 12 ft+ | 54"+ or two fixtures |
For open-plan spaces that flow into other rooms, size up by one row for stronger visual presence.
Quick formula
Don't see your exact room? Use this rule of thumb:
A 14 × 16 ft room → 14 + 16 = 30 → look for a fixture around 28–36".
Sizing over a dining table
The chandelier should be narrower than your table, leaving visual clearance on each side.
| Table length | Seats | Recommended fixture width |
|---|---|---|
| 36" / 3 ft | 2–4 people | 16–20" |
| 48" / 4 ft | 4 people | 20–28" |
| 60" / 5 ft | 4–6 people | 30–40" |
| 72" / 6 ft | 6–8 people | 40–48" |
| 84" / 7 ft | 8–10 people | 48–56" |
| 96"+ / 8 ft+ | 10+ people | Two fixtures, or 60"+ |
For rectangular tables, the fixture length is usually around two-thirds of the table length.
Round tables
Choose a fixture roughly half the diameter of the table.
Kitchen islands
Linear pendants usually look best at about two-thirds of the island length.
Centering the fixture
Center the chandelier above the table itself, not the room.
Hanging height by room type
Height makes or breaks the look. Use these guidelines to keep the fixture beautiful and practical.
Recommended hanging heights
| Room type | Recommended hanging height | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining room | 30–36" above table | Measured from tabletop to fixture base |
| Entryway / foyer | 7 ft minimum from floor | Size up for double-height ceilings |
| Living room | 7–8 ft from floor | Center over seating area |
| Bedroom | 7 ft from floor | Ensure clearance above bed headboard |
| Kitchen island | 28–36" above counter | Lower is fine because no one walks under |
| Staircase / high ceiling | Center visually in the space | Check maximum wire or chain length |
General tips
A few things worth knowing before you order.
Measure twice
Measure your room, table, and ceiling height before selecting a fixture.
High ceilings
With ceilings above 10 ft, add about 3" of hanging height per extra foot.
Sloped ceilings
Check whether the fixture supports sloped ceiling installation before ordering.
Professional installation
We recommend a licensed electrician, especially for larger or heavier fixtures.
